TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

The Gorge

"GEORGE — If you had walked into the Grateful Dead house in 1967 after the boys played the Monterey Pop Fest and asked if they thought they’d still be playing at the age of 70, they’d of probably said, “Roll me up one of whatever you’re smokin’. But there they were with more than a Touch of Grey, Grateful Dead alumni Mickey Hart (72), Billy Kreutzmann (70) and Bob Weir (68) offered a phenomenal setlist Saturday night at The Gorge that would rank high on the list of favorites among Deadheads who have kept the 51-year-old band’s music alive a couple of decades after the death of guitarist Jerry Garcia."

Portland

"On Friday night, Dead & Company brought their Summer Tour to the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. The band featuring Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hartand Bill Kreutzmann alongside Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti and John Mayer, offered an early highlight by performing for the first time together one of the Dead’s classic songs."

Fenway Park

"The Grateful Dead refuses to go gentle into that good nightfall of diamonds. Fifty years after the band’s founding, 20 years after Jerry Garcia’s death, and months after American popular culture gave the godfathers of improvisational rock a reverent wet kiss over the course of three supposed “farewell” shows last summer in Chicago, a new formulation of the band rumbled into being and hit the road again in October."

Alpine Valley

"By treating the animating spirit of the Grateful Dead as something that can flow through anyone who is open to it, the Dead's devoted fans have piously kept the foggy hippie faith that begat their favorite band about 51 years ago. Or that's a nice perspective on why, Saturday night, Dead & Company, the latest lineup of longtime Dead members and fresher apprentices, nearly filled Alpine Valley Music Theatre with Deadheads for the first of two consecutive dates at the venue."

Clarkston

"On Thursday night Dead & Company featuring Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart, Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann joined by John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti brought their tour to the Detroit area for a performance at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan. The show contained plenty of jamming and the Dead & Company debut of a Bob Dylan cover that was a staple of the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire."

Boulder

"Dead and Company rolled into Boulder, Colorado’s Folsom Field hot for America’s birthday celebration and made sure to light up the stage in the stadium that hasn’t hosted a concert since a sold-out Dave Matthews Band show in 2001. Fifteen years may have passed, but the Buffalo’s stadium appeared as if not a year single year had gone by since last hosting a musical get together."

Hartford

"The band stopped in Hartford, CT to finish the first leg of the East Coast Summer Tour on Tuesday, before going on a quick jaunt to Colorado then making their way back East for their two Fenway shows.  On Tuesday afternoon my parents and I drove down to Hartford through spotty rain with our friend Jimmy to catch the show–our first of the tour!…the singing itself was some of the best I’ve heard from a Dead band.  The harmonies on this song especially were phenomenal, almost like they had rehearsed! Jeff and Oteil are really showing that they are multi-talented musicians."

New York

"After welcoming Donna Jean Godchaux out for the band’s opening night at Citi Field in New York, Dead & Company once again collaborated with the longtime Grateful Dead vocalist on their finale. This time, Godchaux came out numerous times throughout the show, adding vocals to early takes on “The Music Never Stopped” and “Bertha” in the first set. In the second, the group welcomed her out on renditions of “He’s Gone,” “Help On the Way,” “Franklin’s Tower” and the set closing “I Know You Rider.” For the encore, she once again appeared for “Samson and Delilah” to close the show."

Bristow

"Dead & Company featuring Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann joined by John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti continued a lengthy summer tour last night at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia. The band continued to expand its repertoire with four tour debuts mixed among more familiar material."

Satatoga Springs

"Dead & Company's inaugural tour opened in Albany last October with a sturdy show where John Mayer's guitar virtuosity made him a more than capable fill-in for deceased Dead leader Jerry Garcia. After eight months and two dozen gigs together, the band returned to the Capital Region with an epic 3-hour SPAC show Tuesday night that revealed a much more in-sync, higher-functioning band that made the performance in October feel very much like a work-in-progress."

"Monday, June 21, 2016 will be remembered by a lucky few not for the once in 50 years alignment of the full moon and summer solstice, but for the epic, almost four-our Dead and Company concert at BB&T Pavilion in Camden, New Jersey. Dead and Company is the most important music story of 2016 and maybe beyond. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, John Mayer hinted the group is considering going into the studio to make new music together."

Camden

"After four shows with no repeats Dead & Company started to hit upon songs for the second time this tour, but still had a number of tour debuts and a D&C debut in store for fans at BB&T Pavilion in Camden, New Jersey on Monday night. Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir along with John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti and Oteil Burbridge had another strong showing in the Philly area that included a dream second set setlist."

"More than a nostalgia trip, this summer's Dead and Company tour may be one of the most important music stories of the year. That's the impression three surviving members of the Grateful Dead and three accomplished recruits made Friday night at Klipsch Music Center. Vocalist-guitarist Bob Weir and drumming tandem Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart are showing they have plenty of inspiring music to make after last summer's "Fare Thee Well" 50th-anniversary Grateful Dead shows."

"The show started with a bit of a jam Dead & Company worked into “Hell In A Bucket.” Mayer then had his first turn up front on “Brown Eyed Women.” The seven-tune first set continued with a pair of “cowboy songs” in “Me & My Uncle” and “Big River,” before John showed off his skills on a passionate “Sugaree.” A loping “Jack Straw” then gave way to a set-closing “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo."

Bonnaroo

"The 15th annual installment of Bonnaroo ended on Sunday night at The Farm in Manchester, Tennessee with two sets of Dead & Company among the final performances of the weekend. Dead & Company had a big treat in store for festivalgoers as the band welcomed former Grateful Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux for portions of both sets and the encore."

"…the real delight of the evening was Mayer’s freaky-good guitar picking. For hardcore fans, the 38-year-old was an eyebrow-raising choice to fill-in for legendary Jerry Garcia, originally. But last fall on the road the shock shifted, and fans were delighted to see how well he worked with Weir onstage. That chemistry has only grown in the months since. And Mayer, previously deferential to his new band, has loosened up, and isn’t afraid to shred."

Art By Brian Butler

"Artist Brian Butler was there, watching the legendary band as they blew minds and played songs from across their decades-long discography, and he made drawings of the performance in real time. Butler has attempted to capture the sounds and sights and magic of the performance with his drawings, and we're very pleased to share them with you here. Check them out below, and see more of Butler's work at theupperhandart.com."

"The two-set performance kicked off with the Dead classic “Truckin’” before the group welcomed out Godchaux, who played with the Dead for most of the ’70s along with husband Keith, for a run of “Bertha,” “Playing in the Band” and “Bird Song.” The band then jumped into a nod to Bonnaroo’s home in “Tennessee Jed.” Godchaux would then return for “Shakedown Street” and the Dead & Co. debut of “Passenger” before a “Bird Song” reprise and a particularly energetic set-closer in “Casey Jones.”Read the full review here: Dead &

“Eyes Of The World” opened the second set and contained plenty of jamming. Once again, Chimenti starred with a frenzied piano solo that was propelled by Oteil’s masterful bass skills. Burbridge displayed a sense of lead bass that is a signature of Phil Lesh’s style throughout the smoking “Eyes.”
