Throwback Thursday – 1967 – The first time I saw Janis Joplin

The first time I saw Janis was at a tiny little club called The Matrix in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. It may have held fifty people. It was like a hallway. What an amazing scene. Big Brother was going crazy feeding back, and Janis stepped to the mic, and it split your head open. It was so out of hand.

In June of 1969, on the third night of our memorable Fillmore West run, Janis joined us for an outstanding duet with Pigpen. They were instantly comfortable with each other as they traded scat vocals and improvised lyrics during "Lovelight." It's obvious they are having great fun together and this special performance ended a fantastic evening. In July of 1970, at the Euphoria Ballroom, Janis and Pigpen did another version of "Lovelight" that everyone should hear at least once in their life.

"All I know is something like a bird within her sang…All I know she sang a little while and then flew off…."
~Robert Hunter

Rest in peace, little bird.
